Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is the most important traditional festival in China. It is celebrated on the first day of the lunar calendar, which usually falls between January 21 and February 20. I always look forward to celebrating Chinese New Year with my family.
Before the Chinese New Year, my family and I clean our house thoroughly. We believe that this will sweep away any bad luck and make room for good luck to come in the new year. We also decorate our house with red lanterns, couplets, and paper cuttings. Red is considered a lucky color in Chinese culture, and it is believed to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits.
On Chinese New Year's Eve, my family gathers for a reunion dinner. We eat a variety of delicious dishes, including fish, dumplings, and sticky rice cake. Each dish has a special meaning. For example, fish symbolizes abundance and prosperity, while dumplings symbolize wealth and good luck. After dinner, we light firecrackers and watch the annual Spring Festival Gala on TV. It is a variety show that showcases traditional Chinese performances, such as lion dances and acrobatics.
During the Chinese New Year, children receive red envelopes called "hongbao" from their elders. These red envelopes contain money and are believed to bring blessings and good luck. I always feel excited when I receive hongbao from my parents, grandparents, and relatives.
On the first day of the new year, my family visits our relatives and friends to exchange greetings and well wishes. We say "Xin Nian Kuai Le" (Happy New Year) and "Gong Xi Fa Cai" (Wishing you prosperity) to each other. It is a time for joy, laughter, and celebration.
In the evening, we set off fireworks to welcome the new year and ward off evil spirits. The sky is filled with colorful lights and loud bangs. It is a truly spectacular sight.
I love celebrating Chinese New Year because it brings my family closer together. It is a time for us to appreciate our traditions, spend quality time with loved ones, and make wonderful memories. I am proud to be a part of such a vibrant and festive culture.
