Dragon Boat Festival in My Hometown
Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival that is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. It is a time for people to remember the great poet Qu Yuan and to ward off evil spirits. In my hometown, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and excitement.
On the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, the whole town is filled with festive atmosphere. The most iconic tradition is the dragon boat races. Teams from different villages and towns compete against each other to see who can row the fastest and win the race. The boats are beautifully decorated with colorful dragon heads and tails, and the rowers paddle vigorously to the beat of the drum. The cheers and shouts from the spectators add to the excitement of the races.
Apart from the dragon boat races, there are also other activities that take place during the festival. One of them is making and eating zongzi, a traditional sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves. People gather together to prepare the ingredients and wrap the zongzi. It is not only a delicious treat but also a way to pay tribute to Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the river and is believed to have been protected by the fish from eating his body. Another activity is hanging up pouches of herbs and plants on the doors and windows to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.
In addition to the traditional customs, there are also modern elements added to the Dragon Boat Festival celebration in my hometown. There are performances of traditional dances and music, as well as cultural exhibitions showcasing the history and significance of the festival. Local shops and restaurants offer special discounts and promotions during the festival, attracting tourists from all over the country.
Dragon Boat Festival in my hometown is a time of joy, togetherness, and cultural pride. It is a time when people come together to celebrate their heritage and enjoy the festivities. The dragon boat races, the making and eating of zongzi, and the hanging of pouches are all traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. I am proud to be a part of this rich cultural heritage and look forward to celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival every year.

My Experience at the Dragon Boat Festival
Last year, I had the opportunity to participate in the Dragon Boat Festival celebrations in my friend's hometown. It was my first time experiencing this traditional Chinese festival, and it was truly an unforgettable experience.
The highlight of the Dragon Boat Festival for me was the dragon boat races. I was lucky enough to be invited to join one of the teams and row in the race. The boat was long and narrow, with a beautiful dragon head and tail. There were 20 rowers in total, and we all had to work together to row in sync. The drummer at the front of the boat set the rhythm, and we paddled with all our might. The adrenaline rush was incredible as we raced against other teams, the water splashing around us. Although we didn't win the race, the sense of camaraderie and teamwork was amazing.
Another memorable experience was making zongzi, the traditional sticky rice dumplings. We gathered in my friend's grandmother's kitchen and she taught us how to make zongzi from scratch. We soaked the sticky rice, prepared the fillings, and wrapped them in bamboo leaves. It was a labor-intensive process, but it was so much fun to learn about the traditional way of making zongzi. After we finished making them, we boiled them in a large pot and enjoyed them together as a group. The taste of the homemade zongzi was incredibly delicious and made the whole experience even more special.
During the festival, my friend's family also hung up pouches of herbs and plants on their doors and windows. They explained to me that it is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. It was interesting to learn about these traditional customs and superstitions.
Overall, my experience at the Dragon Boat Festival was incredible. I had the opportunity to participate in the dragon boat races, make zongzi, and learn about the traditional customs. It was a time of joy, laughter, and cultural pride. I am grateful to have had the chance to be a part of this celebration and I look forward to experiencing it again in the future.
